Go Elseware: The EAST – A Retrospective Exploring London’s East End

The UK is an exciting island right now. We will be flying our Union Jack flags and raising our glasses to the boss as she celebrates 60 years on the thrown, plus London is being transformed ahead of the Olympics which hits our shores this summer. As we celebrate the best exhibitions in London this week, we wanted to share a pop up gallery which takes us back to London, before Elizabeth ruled Britannia and Shoreditch and Hoxton were not populated by multi coloured skinny jeans and filled with eclectic house. The ‘EAST – a Retrospective Exploring London’s East End’ by Getty Images Gallery in collaboration with Westfield Stratford City, captures the spirit of the East End made up of photographs taken from the archives of Getty Images. Set in black and white photography, the captivating show is also available to purchase and includes images from the legendary Picture Post magazine; The Pool of London; Whitechapel’s Jews and Cockneys’ Own Party. “The EAST exhibition is a selection of some of our most iconic and esteemed images showcasing life in East London over the past 100 years,” commented Getty Images Gallery Director, Louise Garczewska. “We are incredibly excited to be able to offer the East London community the chance to see some of these rare and incredible shots, hand selected from our archive of over 80 million images.” Artwork will be available to order throughout the duration of the exhibition to bespoke frames and sizes.

Go Elseware: Dan Holdsworth “Transmission: New Remote Earth Views”

In Dan Holdsworth’s latest series Transmission: New Remote Earth Views, he appropriates topographical data to document the ideologically and politically loaded spaces of the American West in a new way. In his images of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mount Shasta, Mount St. Helens, Salt Lake City and Park City, are stark uninterrupted terrains where meaning is made through what it is absent, as much as what is seen. What at first appears to be a pure white snow-capped mountain is in fact a digitally rendered laser scan of the earth appropriated from United States Geological Survey data, a ‘terrain model’ used to measure climate and land change (to measure man’s effect on the earth). “Transmission” captures the world as if from space, functioning not only as a map of the land but as a mapping of the discourses that these lands have come to represent, oscillating between realms of art and science, the familiar and the alien, and the industrial and natural. Holdsworth was born in 1974 in Welwyn Garden City, England. He studied photography at the London College of Printing, and has exhibited internationally including solo shows at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and Barbican Art Gallery, London; and group shows at Tate Britain, London, and Centre Pompidou, Paris. His work is held in collections including the Tate Collection, Saatchi Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Showing at Brancolini Grimaldi from 23rd March – 19th May 2012.
